The Chinese case script

1. The Chinese case script existed virtually unchanged for 2 thousand
   years until a run of simplified forms began to be introduced by the main-
   land Chinese government in the 1950's. These simplified parts, which we
   employ under this book, are employed throughout China and increasingly in Chinese
   communities outside China, but not Taiwan. Chinese has been transcribed
   into Western alphabetic script through different systems for over one hundred
   years and this book makes employ of the norm romanisation pinyin.
   The formal written speech of China until the other decades of the twentieth
   century was Classical Chinese, which, as the vehicle for all publicly acknow-
   ledged lit and for prescribed support, was at the spirit of the Chinese
   cultural tradition. However, it had grown remote from spoken Chinese in syntax
   and lexis, and had a post somewhat cognate to gothic Latin in relationship to the
   Romance speeches it had spawned. It was left behind by modern written claims,
   based on spoken Chinese, which evolved over the past a hundred years, but echoes
   of Classic Chinese remain in contemporary language and composition, especially in
   literary and aphoristic registers. This continued front under the Classical today
   will be mentioned at various points in our analysis
